We all know that stock photography provides a relatively cheap and easy way to quickly add content to your website which looks professional, but does it really sell your brand’s ethic and core values?
Here are my three reasons why hiring a professional photographer (ideally me) would make a greater impact on your brand than using stock photography:

1. Greater engagement on social media

Having images which represent your company will provide a much higher engagement rate on your social media channels, such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter). It will also mean the followers that you do get are more in line with the values of your company. This is because your company’s imagery has been created by somebody who understands how your business works. In effect creating a targeted marketing campaign via your photographs.

Using stock photography, also known as library shots, for this purpose presents your company in the same way as countless other businesses selling the same product. In today’s competitive market, it’s important that your business stands out from the crowd.

2. Creating your brand identity

That initial visual connection with your customer is key. With people able to process visuals 60,000 times faster than text it is important you get across the right message. Hiring a professional photographer rather than purchasing stock imagery helps achieve this by keeping consistency and a strong brand authenticity throughout the work.

This becomes especially important as a business grows. It allows people to identify photographs which have been produced for you before they even know they are yours. A good example of this is National Geographic, which has a very strong photography branding which has been adhered to for many years. It is easy to see an image and subliminally think “that’s very National Geographic” before you even click through the image.

It takes time to build this kind of image, but in the end it is definitely worth it (and definitely can’t be achieved by using the same library shots as your competitors).

3. Flexibility

Lastly, hiring a professional photographer offers you flexibility in terms of the brief which stock photography just can’t provide.

How many times have you considered using a certain library shot for your website, brochure or social media and thought “that would be perfect if the model was facing the other way” or “I wish that car wasn’t in the background”.
